What is the UV Index?
The UV Index measures the strength of ultraviolet radiation from the sun at a given time and place. Higher values mean greater risk of sunburn and skin damage. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) breaks the scale into five exposure categories.
Low0–2
Minimal danger. No protection needed for normal activity.
Moderate3–5
Wear sunglasses and use SPF 30+ if you’ll be outside.
High6–7
Reduce sun exposure 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Protective clothing recommended.
Very High8–10
Minimize midday sun. SPF 30+, hat, and sunglasses essential.
